Overview

I participated in a semester-long UX design program called Creative Labs. In groups of 5-6, we were taught the basics of the design process and how to craft a case study.

Background

MyFitnessPal is a calorie tracking app, where users can keep track of their health by logging their food and exercise. The current MyFitnessPal app lacks user-friendliness resulting in a poor user experience. We chose this for our redesign because we all have used it and saw a clear need for user experience improvements.

User Research

we built an online survey that focused on questions related to health habits, feature categorization, and navigation and interactions within the app. We shared it with various college group chats, collecting over 40 submissions from both regular and first time MyFitnessPal users.

Insights

Pain Points

  1. Cluttered interface and complex navigation

Users found the app overwhelming and confusing, with key features hidden or hard to access.

  2. Negative impact of calorie counting

The emphasis on calorie counting contributed to unhealthy relationships with food and exercise for some users.

  3. Steep learning curve

New users struggle to understand how to use the app effectively, leading to early drop-off and low retention rates.

Design Goals

  1. Clear and intuitive navigation

Simplify the interface to make essential features such as logging foods and tracking exercise easier to find and use, especially for first time users.

  2. Encourage wellness over calorie counting

We aimed to encourage users to foster a healthier relationship with fitness by focusing less on calorie counting and more on overall wellness.

  3. Simplicity and efficiency

By removing clutter and unnecessary features, we wanted to create a minimalist design that retained essential functionality.

Usability Testing and Takeaways

To validate our redesign, we conducted hallway usability testing with 5 participants. Users found the new interface significantly easier to navigate than the original. They appreciated the cleaner layout, more intuitive flow, and the ability to access core features with less friction.

They especially responded positively to the reduced emphasis on calorie counting. Several shared that they would be more likely to use the redesigned app consistently, as it supported a healthier, more sustainable relationship with fitness.

This project was a valuable learning experience in applying user-centered design principles. It highlighted the importance of balancing functionality with emotional impact, and demonstrated how thoughtful design decisions can directly influence user motivation, behavior, and retention.
